Well! There goes Spring. Suddenly it's snowy again, and cold, and the sun's disappeared :-(
In other news, final exams are coming up. The first is this Wednesday and I have two on Easter Monday(!). Blah. I know that the city buses run on Monday, but I'm not sure about the commuter bus I usually take into the city ... fingers crossed! Then, the next day, I have what is optimistically called an 'evening' exam, meaning that it starts at 7pm. Considering it's a three hour exam, and then an hour ride home? Yeah, definitely a night exam.
So I'm kinda aorta studying. Wish me good luck, etc.

So, on Friday I managed to put both my shirt and my sweater on inside out, which I did not notice until I got to university. At which point, by the way, it was 6:30am and I was very groggy and unsurprised.
So, yes, the bus strike is still going strong and I'm still getting to uni unbearably early. The situation is great for reading, though - I'm getting all my assigned readings finished at school.
Yesterday my mother and I went to see The Curious case of Benjamin Button. That is a sad movie, guys, no two ways about it. We also rented Ghost Town which was funny but not great. Some of the gags were a little drawn out, and I found myself waiting for a plot twist that never came.
I feel like I have more to say but ... nope, that's it. Toodles, guys.

The snow was really picking up as I was coming home today, it looks like we might be having a bit of a storm tonight. And! We're about to get the first serious freeze in Ontario this winter, with temperatures below -30 degrees. Sooo cooold.
The bus strike is still on-going, with no end on the horizon. Good/bad, the TAs at my university are voting on their own strike this week, and if classes were cancelled dur to a strike, at least students wouldn't have to venture out into the cold? I mean, that probably isn't worth it in the end, but brrrrr.
I've been driving in early (when my ride leaves, doncha know) so I've had a lot of free time at university. The result of this is that I've finished all my books for English class this term. Particularly good was Being There, and I know there was a film adaptation. I might have to track it down.
... My brother is making a Sidekick and, reading the directions, he says, "It says a cup of milk ... is that a teacup?" *facepalm*

*sigh* Well, today is the last day of break, and I'm back to uni tomorrow. The bus strike in Ottawa is still going on and will continue for at least a week, I think, before the next vote comes up. This is pretty aggravating for people like me, who rely on the bus to commute. Argh, argh. Luckily I have a relative of a relative who works at Carleton (yay!) so I will be bumming rides until then.
Anyway, happy New Year! I don't think I've said it yet, have I? I had such a quiet New Year's Eve, just stayed at home and watched the CNN coverage of Times Square. Oh, and rahmbamarama was trying to get 40,000 words by January 1st so I was spamming them :-P
Today my family drove into Ottawa to do a bunch of end-of-holiday shopping, before we were all busy again. I had recieved a $50 gift certificate for Chapters, so we went there and bought about ten books. I grabbed The Uncensored Bible and The Gift of Fear (which came very highly recommended by cleolinda). I also picked up In & Out because it is HILARIOUS.
My brother found a new series of books to read, by Russell Kirkpatric and bought the first four. He has a fear of starting a series and not being able to find all the books, so this is his solution. And my dad picked up some really interesting history books that I simply must borrow once he's done.
Being out all day has given me a headache, unfortunately, so I must be off. Toodles.

I wrote my second to last exam today, for Linguistics 1001. It was set for two hours ... I finished in 45 minutes. And I wasn't even the first one finished! About ten people left before I did. Admittedly, it was pretty easy, as long as you had been to the classes/read the textbook. Still, it left me VERY BORED for the six hours between my finishing and my leaving the university.
Also, the Ottawa city transit workers are on strike. This means that there are no buses running in the city at all, so I have been communting in with my father. Luckily we've also been hit by a tonne of snow, so traffic is a BREEZE /sarcasm.
What really annoys be about the situation is all the anti-union sentiment I was hearing on the radio this morning, all these callers and commentators plainly blaming the union for the strike. Then, on the radio program I was listening to, they interviewed a disgruntled communter and a huge deal because OH MY GOD he thought it was all the city's fault. Grr.

Today we had our first real test in American Sign Language. It was a vocabulary test - the professor signed and we wrote down the translation. Because this was our first one, it was only 75 words, while the rest will have 100. I think I did pretty well ... I missed a few, but not very many, so that doesn't have me worried.
My first two assingments are due on Friday, a journal for Sociology and some questions for Linguistics. Almost done those.
You now what's really annoying? Whoever sets these things up has decided to broadcast the Leader's Debate on October 2nd. This is the same date as the American Vice President debates, in fact, I think they coincide. Now there are people who actually aren't sure which one they want to watch, not to mention Canadians who plan on watching the American debate rather than our own.
Why wasn't it schedueled for another day? The American one was already set. This was avoidable. Gah.
Voter apathy is too common around here.
Sigh.

*Am watching The Colbert Report and am laughing uproarously*
So, university is going okay. I had American Sign Language today. Learning ASL is, of course, at least as difficult as any other language, but mostly I enjoy the experience. I can now count to twenty and sign simple phrases such as: Hi! My name is Lyndsey. I'm a student at Carleton University, majoring in Linguistics.
W00t.
Speaking of Lingusitics, I'm learning more about the differences between it and Applied Language Studies, and I'm not sure which I like more.
Anyway, ( linkspam! )

So, the first week of university is out of the way. I've met all of my professors except for my English prof, 'cause I don't have English until Monday.
The classes are fine (I LOVE how the course outlines tell you how many assignments there will be throughout the semester - and often when they will be due. Fantastic!) and my professors are fine. Dr. Reid (Sociology 1001) seems really awesome, and has a great policy re: helping out with your assignments even though she has 1400 students.
Professor Kidd (American Sign Language) appears to have a good sense of humour, but I can't be sure because he barely spoke. He's deaf, and mostly just mimed at us. And he signed, of course, but we don't really comprehend yet.
Commuting every day is exhausting. It's easy (I only take one bus into Ottawa, and then one more takes me directly to campus) but long. 3+ hours a day on the bus = yawn. Luckily, I'll be able to use some of that for reading.

Well, this is it. Orientation is tomorrow - it's also the first time I will be riding the bus all the way in solo.
I'm worried I will forget to bring something I need. I'm worried I'll need more cash than I have. I'm worried I'll get lost during the tour, or mixed in with the wrong group. I'm worried I'll be late. I'm worried I won't be able to eat anything at the barbecue. I'm worried the convocation will go too long, and I'll miss the bus back to town. I'm worried I won't be able to find the bus stop to get home - because it's just on a random corner.
Mostly I'm worried I'll have a panic attack due to all that stuff *waves vaguely* up there.
God, I hate this.

I'm contemplating going for a walk after dinner. It's really nice out; sunny, not too warm.
On Tuesday my father, brother and I all took the bus into Ottawa. I want to practice taking the bus into Carleton U, figure out the schedules and such, before starting school in the Fall. So we caught the bus that shuttles people into the city at 7am and then figured out which bus would get me to the university. That part's very simple. I'm still not quite sure how to get back in the afternoon, but I have some time to sort it out.
While in Ottawa we decided to take in a film. I really wanted to see The Love Guru (Stephen!) but unfortunately it was only being shown in the evenings *sigh* We saw WALL-E intead, and I enjoyed it.
Tommorrow is a) My great-granmother's birthday party, b) a strawberry social at the local museum (yum ...), c) a labyrinth tour at the same place (although, haha, I checked out the 'labyrinth' today and it's all of an inch high - will be interesting to see what they do with it for tomorrow), and d) the unveiling of the Hallmark Christmas decorations. This last one is relevant because my mother works there.
It promises to be a busy weekend!

My last day of work was supposed to be on Monday, but the boss has decided to close the shop in a pre-Canada Day long weekend. So my last day will be on Wednesday. Whee.
I recently registered for my first year of university courses. Scheduling was a horror; I detest having to schedule my own classes, gah. Ended up with an early class on Friday, of all days, and couldn't fit in my fifth class, the recommended First Year Seminar. They suggest every first-year BA student take one, and then there aren't enough spaces *sigh* And the classes seem to have shifted timeslots slightly since I first registered.
Must wait until next week, see if they'll open a slot for me in one of the FYSM, and then either register for it or pick another, non-FYSM class. Have no idea what that will be.

Happy May to everyone!
May the first I had a Spring Information Meeting right after work (in that I had to leave right after work in order to get there on time), and that's actually the first time I've been on the Carleton University campus. It's about as nice as they say, although the architecture is all over the place - nothing matches and it looks kind of shabby because of it. I wouldn't consider that a problem though. Oh, and I didn't get to see the tunnels :-( I'll have to wait until my tour over the summer.
On May the second (yesterday, ya' know) my brother, father and I went to see Iron Man at the small theatre in our town. Like I said, the place is small, but I haven't seen it so packed in a really long time. They're going to really clean up with that movie.
And it was a good film! The 'bad guy' was a pretty obvious guess, but what do you expect? After the film, though, when we were leaving the theatre, my brother heard some guy who was also leaving telling some other guy who was waiting in line (and I quote): "Dude, all I can say is, if there are Iron Man comics, BUY THEM!" Ashlfhoeitfjesd. If? If!? Oh, man.
May the third (today) is Free Comic Book Day! This is the third, or maybe fourth, year I've taken advantage of this awesome day, and this year we actually have a comic shop in town! I mean, we're going into Ottawa, too, but it's cool to have one nearby.
All in all, it's been a good month so far.

I just recieved an email from Carleton University, telling me that they had made a decision regarding my application. Please note the words in the yellow rectangle:
( I'm sure you can see where this is going )
