I've rented Tales of the Black Freighter/Under the Hood, for completion's sake :-D To be honest, Tales of the Black Freighter is probably a little more disturbing than I would like, but I decided I wanted to see the cartoon anyway.

It seems to be a pretty basic frame-for-frame replication, except spoiler! ) Other than that, it's basically what it says on the tin.

Under the Hood looks really corny, in that they went to some trouble to make the footage fit the period. The ageing looks pretty fake in a few cases, but maybe in an amusing way? It doesn't bother me.

Since, in the comic, Under the Hood is an autobiography, it doesn't obviously translate into a short film. Instead, they presented it as an interview sort of show - like you might see on A&E. We get to see interviews with Hollis, Sally, Schexnayder, and even Bernard the newspaper guy! Lots of characters who don't get a lot of screentime in the film show up in this show. And there's newsreel footage of the Minutemen.

Hilariously, there are 'commercials' at regular intervals, as if it were an actual TV show. One of them was even spoiler! )

DUDE. I saw Watchmen four times, and Moloch always left me scratching my head. I knew I recognized him, but damned if I could remember. Talking with my dad just now I finally remembered that he was on PSI Factor. It was definitely a D'oh! moment.

(And, while looking through his IMDB page, I noticed that he did the voice for Jackal on Gargoyles. That a) is pretty damn cool, and b) should have been obvious. I watched lots of PSI Factor and lots of Gargoyles ... and his voice is kind of distinctive.)

So, over on [info]startrek (on LJ) there have been a few images from the new movie posted recently. And, uh, I'm kind of getting excited :-D

Simon Pegg as Scotty still makes me boggle, though. Also: WINONA RYDER as Spock's mother. What is that?

Okay! I was slow with this one, but [info]spacemonkeyluvn was interested so here it is :-)

Stargate! )

Well, that was shorter than I thought it would be ... but I'm not very articulate right now (must sleep more ;-)).

First of all, I have to say up front that I haven't read the comic. I want to, okay? I just haven't gotten around to it. And now I'll probably put it off until after I get my hands on Watchmen, 'cause I want to read that one before the film comes out.

(BTW, saw the trailer for Watchmen and it looked fantastic! Yet my brother isn't interested in the least, and he's my go-to guy for hero flicks. Who will go with me?)

kingbird and Zoe reminded me ... )

I ... can't make anymore sense than this, I'm afraid. I was blown away by this film, more than I expected, and it has fried my brain.

I saw The Dark Knight after helping my aunt move on Saturday (y'know what? Moving is easier with a truck) AND I rented the new Harold and Kumar movie today (completely motivated by the cast, I swear) AND I got to see Stargate: Continuum.

Someone remind me to talk about them later, when I'm not asleep? Thank you.

Today was our day-trip to Kingston. While there we managed to not visit either Fort Henry or the university.

Our one really touristy accomplishment was visiting the Marine Museum, which I enjoyed. I went on ahead of my family and, apparently, they ended up missing the door that leads to the back of the museum, so I'm the only one who got to see the whole place \o/

To make up for this, I got a bit of vertigo on the ship tour afterwards and had to go read instead (not that I don't enjoy reading, of course).

We also had lunch (quesadillas = yum) and then, in a very spur-of-the-moment sort of way, went to see The X-Flies: I Want to Believe.

No spoliers, but I liked it! Granted, I missed the boat when X-Files originally aired, so my knowledge of the series is so-so. It was still great to see it. My family, however, were ready to leave pretty quickly, so whatever happened after/during the credits? I missed. Someone tell me what it was?

My mother's first workds once we had left the theatre were, "I'm kind of disturbed." XD

Other highlights, uh ... Oh. I picked up Dan In Real Life, because sexual tension in a film really does it for me. We stopped at the chocolate factory on the way there ♥ My mom has taken to inviting my cousin along with us to things, which is cool with me because she's great. I need to start transcribing the conversation I have with my brother; Emmy says we're very entertaining XD

The weekend was very busy! My aunt is moving so we've been helping her paint her new house. And we stopped into my great-grandmother's birthday party, which was very nice, but outside. Ooh, it was warm.

The local museum has also had a lot going on. There was a strawberry social (I loved the strawberry shortcake! It came with a mint leaf and one chocolate dipped strawberry. Yum) and then, in the evening, a candle-lit labyrinth walk.

Then I headed to the movie theatre to watch the new Helloboy movie. That film is visually stunning, is all I have to say. Guillermo del Toro included a little of the art you might recognize from Pan's Labyrinth, and it's really appropriate considering all the supernatural hoo-ha in the story.

Sunday night I caught the newest episode of Factory, a new comedy on SPIKE. This was, I think, the third episode, and I think it was the best yet. My favourite character is probably Smitty, a guy living with his ex-wife and her step-father's sister's daughter (Tracy). His interaction with (and fantasies of) Tracy are hilarious.

In this episode a baggie full of marijuana was found in in factory where the characters work, and the employees were all interviewed by these crazy anti-drug guys. Each of the four main characters had a prison fantasy during their interview ... and the red headded dude's involved being groped by the gorilla guards from Planet of the Apes XD

Anyone remember Plan 9 From Outer Space? Arguably the worst film ever made, so bad that it's actually hilarious?

Supposedly they're remaking it.

I know, I'm confused, too.

Well, I finally saw Juno. It was enjoyable. I don't actually have anything to say about the film.

EXCEPT that Allison Janney, who is apparently a fairly successful actress, plays the titular character's stepmother. Despite her success, I have only seen this woman once before, and that's when she was trading sexual euphemisms with Onyx Blackman in Strangers With Candy.

My point is, I have a one track mind.

Happy May to everyone!

May the first I had a Spring Information Meeting right after work (in that I had to leave right after work in order to get there on time), and that's actually the first time I've been on the Carleton University campus. It's about as nice as they say, although the architecture is all over the place - nothing matches and it looks kind of shabby because of it. I wouldn't consider that a problem though. Oh, and I didn't get to see the tunnels :-( I'll have to wait until my tour over the summer.

On May the second (yesterday, ya' know) my brother, father and I went to see Iron Man at the small theatre in our town. Like I said, the place is small, but I haven't seen it so packed in a really long time. They're going to really clean up with that movie.

And it was a good film! The 'bad guy' was a pretty obvious guess, but what do you expect? After the film, though, when we were leaving the theatre, my brother heard some guy who was also leaving telling some other guy who was waiting in line (and I quote): "Dude, all I can say is, if there are Iron Man comics, BUY THEM!" Ashlfhoeitfjesd. If? If!? Oh, man.

May the third (today) is Free Comic Book Day! This is the third, or maybe fourth, year I've taken advantage of this awesome day, and this year we actually have a comic shop in town! I mean, we're going into Ottawa, too, but it's cool to have one nearby.

All in all, it's been a good month so far.

You can all thank colbertobsessed for nudging me and quite politely reminding me that I've vanished :-P

Work has been quite dull lately, hence my disinterest in posting. Nothing to say! Dear me.

What I have done recently is watch a few films. Have rented Death at a Funeral, which was truly hilarious, and Martian Child, which was funny and sweet.

I also finally rented Sweeney Todd. Can I say, first of all, that I am so glad I didn't see this in theatres? I was laughing too much; I'm certain I would have annoyed my fellow theatre-goers.

One of the more inappropriate times I laughed (beware SPOILERS, should you be so inclined):

Pirelli, the fake Italian fancy-schmancy barber, is in the process of blackmailing Todd, right? And Todd keeps glancing sideways at the tea kettle, which is starting to boil. You KNOW he's going to pummel Pirelli with it, and I suppose it's supposed to be a 'dramatic' moment. At least, I don't think it's supposed to be funny ...

But it was. To me, I mean; all I could think of was Principal Blackman yelling, "Hot tea!" and throwing said drink in the face of that poor boy XD Strangers With Candy has permeated my brain!

That is all.

It's only been about a week. More or less. Ish.

Work has been really slow, so you'd think I'd get off my butt and update, but alas, I am actually having a real life :-P (not much of one. You know, satisfactory).

But yes, work=slow. I picked up an application for one of the local grocery stores (Hi, Alison!) and am going to apply for the night-shift *shiftyeyes* I am fully aware that there will be no turkey-bowling.

Or blue hookers.

Or members of the Undead.

I'll shut up now.

Hmm, what have I been up to? Went to my mother's cousin's babyshower (she's having identical twins!), but it was mostly baking in the sun while talking about fishing. Still, there was fun to be had. And food to be eaten.

Saw Ratatouille with Friend Katie and Kinda-Friend Adam. This is after Friend Katie had been MIA due to spazzing Hotmail and a family vacation, so it wasn't so much about the movie as it was hanging out. So we may have been a bit rude and talked too much during the film :-( I always feel bad about that.

The movie was good (not fabulous, or anything). Friend Katie and I have come to a conclusion, however: that movie was about being gay-or-similar. There's this part where the rat (Remy) says something about knowing what he is and not wanting to pretend to be this for his father, or that for his brother. I honestly can't give examples (I saw the film once, last week), but TRUST ME! Watch the film with this in mind. You might not agree, but you'll see where we're coming from.

Calling Richard Branson 'unpredictable' seems to be fairly accurate.

Two points of interest today:

1. We print books at work. Today I was going through boxes of unbound books (which were collated together), removing the slipsheets, and staggering the piles so that they could be picked up easily.

Little did I know (or the people who were going to bind them, apparently), the books were too wide for the covers that had been printed.

That's right. They had to be cut first.

WHICH MEANS, unfortunately, I had to PUT THE SLIPSHEETS BACK. Did I mention that it took two hours to remove them in the first place? Yes. So that's a total of about three hours of non-productivity I'm getting paid for next week.

2. Brandon and I went right out and rented Hot Fuzz this afternoon. BRILLIANT. Much better than I thought it would be (a touch gorier, too). I've been trying to get my hands on Shaun of the Dead for awhile, but I must be blind because I can't find it at the movie place. Then again, this is the same rental store that failed to provide me with Dogma or any of the Evil Dead films.

On Hot Fuzz: Minor spoilers, I suppose )

Anyway, it was a good watch.

I rented the film Bon Cop, Bad Cop yesterday.

This movie is an action-comedy revolving around a serial killer who has it in for members of the hockey community. When his first victim is found on the Ontario/Quebec border, officers from both provincial police forces must work together to catch him.

It is completely bilingual. I loved it. Lots of jokes, lots of action, and plenty of subtitles for one's particular linguistic handicap. The tagline: Shoot first, translate later.

I would recommend this to everyone, but I'm afraid it might only appeal to Canadians...

So, the semester is over. It feels kind of anti-climatic to me, since I don't have any exams. My classes weren't hard and there were only two of them, so I'm feeling rather meh at the moment. Next semester I have actual academic courses, so hurrah for that.

I'm pimping LOST again. Go. Join. It takes minimal effort and, really, it was created in the interest of academics.

Saw The Guardian earlier. Not going into detail, I will say a few things:

1. The ending was a love-it-or-hate-it scenario.
2. I am apparently a sucker for training in films? An odd revelation, I must say.
3. A little corny in spots, but still a good movie.

It was better than the other rental we got, All the King's Men. I didn't finish that one. Jude Law was doing a southern accent, though, which was something of a novelty.

Last night I couldn't sleep so I decided to watch The Pagemaster.

This is one of the few animated movies that my family has kept. It used to scare the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid, what with the hellish Moby Dick scene (and all of the Horror section - gah). I hadn't watched it in awhile and I really enjoyed myself!

Patrick Stewart played Adventure. Who is a pirate. Patrick Stewart played a pirate! He called Macaulay Culkin a 'seabiscuit.' :-D

Oh, and the librarian's name was Mr. Dewey. Ah, so funny!

Well, okay, I have been gone for awhile! To tell the truth, I've been so busy with homework that it's not even funny. At all. I got 5 hours of sleep last night and only 2 the night before. But it will all be better in one week! So expect to see more of me.

I have various bits of news to relate:

1) I went to see Sahara on Saturday, as an early Mother's Day outing for my mom (who my brother and I paid for). It was... odd. A Civil War ship in the middle of the Sahara desert? And the plot was a little stringy. But my mom liked it, and that's the point.

2)My parents got the house!!!! We'll be moving in during the first week of July. This is the first house that my parents have ever owned, so we're all pretty excited.

3) On friday, my BIO teacher brought in a cow heart. You'd be surprised how excited everyone was! I'm just happy it wasn't bloody. It was a very useful teaching tool, even if the top was cut off.

4)Last week, Alfred Molina was the crminal on a double episode of Law And Order. I actually squeed, if that isn't pathetic! I stayed up late and skipped a lot of homework to do it, too, so I think that says something about me.

Well, that's all for now! I'll see about getting on again, later.
