I've rented Tales of the Black Freighter/Under the Hood, for completion's sake :-D To be honest, Tales of the Black Freighter is probably a little more disturbing than I would like, but I decided I wanted to see the cartoon anyway.
It seems to be a pretty basic frame-for-frame replication, except ( spoiler! ) Other than that, it's basically what it says on the tin.
Under the Hood looks really corny, in that they went to some trouble to make the footage fit the period. The ageing looks pretty fake in a few cases, but maybe in an amusing way? It doesn't bother me.
Since, in the comic, Under the Hood is an autobiography, it doesn't obviously translate into a short film. Instead, they presented it as an interview sort of show - like you might see on A&E. We get to see interviews with Hollis, Sally, Schexnayder, and even Bernard the newspaper guy! Lots of characters who don't get a lot of screentime in the film show up in this show. And there's newsreel footage of the Minutemen.
Hilariously, there are 'commercials' at regular intervals, as if it were an actual TV show. One of them was even ( spoiler! )
DUDE. I saw Watchmen four times, and Moloch always left me scratching my head. I knew I recognized him, but damned if I could remember. Talking with my dad just now I finally remembered that he was on PSI Factor. It was definitely a D'oh! moment.
(And, while looking through his IMDB page, I noticed that he did the voice for Jackal on Gargoyles. That a) is pretty damn cool, and b) should have been obvious. I watched lots of PSI Factor and lots of Gargoyles ... and his voice is kind of distinctive.)

Well! There goes Spring. Suddenly it's snowy again, and cold, and the sun's disappeared :-(
In other news, final exams are coming up. The first is this Wednesday and I have two on Easter Monday(!). Blah. I know that the city buses run on Monday, but I'm not sure about the commuter bus I usually take into the city ... fingers crossed! Then, the next day, I have what is optimistically called an 'evening' exam, meaning that it starts at 7pm. Considering it's a three hour exam, and then an hour ride home? Yeah, definitely a night exam.
So I'm kinda aorta studying. Wish me good luck, etc.

Wow, the weather has been just beautiful this week. All of a sudden I don't need my coat during the day, and it's starting to smell like Spring. I hadn't really realized just how bored I was getting of Winter.
University is in the final stretch - final exams are in April. I've decided to look for a summer job rather than take classes during the holiday, since we're probably going to visit family in August. It's so much easier to leave a job mid-August than to miss classes right before an exam period, you know? Plus, y'know, money. Now I just need to find work ...
So, last weekend, I saw Watchmen with my dad and brother.( Read more... )
I think I lost my train of thought :-P Maybe I'll have something more to say tomorrow ... after I watch it for the fourth time (What? I like it!).
Immature Moment of the Day: I'm in Language Studies, right? And we're talking about language in the construction of national identity, when an odd definition of "community" came up: "A deep, horizontal comradeship regardless of class ... differences." I probably don't have to explain what 'deep, horizontal comradeship' made me think of *sigh*

I'm in that early infatuation phase with a new fandom - NCIS. I'm in the process of catching up with the previous five seasons but man, I need some good fic! I'm having fits because I can't seem to find the good stuff. Anyone follow NCIS and have some fic to rec?
Basically all I've read is sam_storyteller's stuff, and he's written a grand total of two stories (he says he won't write any more, but his Abstract on the Interpersonal Relationships of NCIS is too good not to wish he would).

This is the last installment for 2008. With some luck, I'll started on the 2009 list before the year's over ... we'll see.
31. When You Are Engulfed in Flames, by David Sedaris. Having recently read Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, I was pleased to see David Sedaris interviewed for his new book on The Daily Show. If you didn't get to see the interview, Sedaris mostly talked about his time in Japan, and the book expands on his anecdotes. They're hilarious, by the way. I highly suggest you give his books a try.
( Fangs, mystery, and a whole lot more... )
That's it for now. Next up: 2009.

I know, I know, my ability to keep to a schedule is pathetic. Moving on!
21. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, by David Sedaris. This is the first of Mr. Sedaris' books I ever read, and I admit that I only became interested in his work because his sister is a hoot. It turns out that he is is completely different and yet equally enjoyable. His books are collections of autobiographical essays that manage to be both heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny, and I would recommend any of his books in a second.
( Under the cut you have baseball, fairy lands, dinosaurs, and even a love story or two ... )
So that's it for this installment. I only read 39 books in 2008, so there will be one more entry on that, hopefully in the near future. Currently I'm reading Seven Deady Wonders by action-adventure author Matthew Reilly ... not a favourite, but good so far.

Stupid and funny Star Trek parody ... thing. Stephen Colbert as Spock just about slayed me (and Jon Stewart was Khan!) not to mention the surprise Christopher Walken.
In other news, I was reading the AC360 blog and found this story on why Americans need to know more about our fair country up here. Which I don't necessarly disagree with, I mean ... we're right here. We don't have much of an excuse for having poor relations. Anyway, it reminded me of a book I recently read called The U.S. of Eh?
It was written for Americans. Why? To show them that we're the ones who are actually pulling the strings :-D There are Canadian connections EVERYWHERE, and this books uses them to prove that we are, in fact, America's benevolent overlords. I recommend it to everyone on my flist :-D
There other day, on my drive to university, the radio was having a love-affair with Obama. Seriously. Have you all heard about the Canadian radio station compiling a list of '49 songs from above the 49th parallel'? It's an Inaugaration mix for Obama, from Canada, and you can read the list here (I'm rather partial to Canada's Really Big).
Also, now that I've listened to American Woman ... wow, that's not very flattering, is it?)
That isn't the only thing that CBC Radio 2 has done for Obama; they haven't stopped talking about him (admittedly, he's coming up here in a few weeks). What I found most amusing was the rendition of La Bamba reworked as Obama. It was hilarious. On a similar note, my ASL prof was in my Language Studies class to give a lecture on signed languages and how they are different than spoken ones, and he told us how the Deaf community had given Obama a sign name. It kind of mimics his campaign logo, it's an O with a wave under it.
Oh, and while I'm here: my family was in Ottawa on the weekend, and passed by a street called Elvis Lives Road XD

I heard about this incident on the radio this morning. When I was in the car. With my dad XD
The DJs were laughing so hard, it was hard not to get caught up in it. I can't believe she said that, I'm cringing with embarrassment just thinking about it.
I am also laughing out loud.

Ooh, I hadn't heard of this movie before the 'news story' came up on my homepage. A romantic comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor? Looks interesting!
On a similar note, I haven't seen Milk yet :-( They didn't play it in town (we have a small theatre, so they only go for the high grossing films - which controversial films are not) and I don't have anyone locally who wants to drive around to see it. I imagine it will take even longer to see I Love You Phillip Morris, since it's an independant film.
Either it will be quite good, because I have to wait, or it will be a HUGE disappointment. We shall see!

So, on Friday I managed to put both my shirt and my sweater on inside out, which I did not notice until I got to university. At which point, by the way, it was 6:30am and I was very groggy and unsurprised.
So, yes, the bus strike is still going strong and I'm still getting to uni unbearably early. The situation is great for reading, though - I'm getting all my assigned readings finished at school.
Yesterday my mother and I went to see The Curious case of Benjamin Button. That is a sad movie, guys, no two ways about it. We also rented Ghost Town which was funny but not great. Some of the gags were a little drawn out, and I found myself waiting for a plot twist that never came.
I feel like I have more to say but ... nope, that's it. Toodles, guys.

The snow was really picking up as I was coming home today, it looks like we might be having a bit of a storm tonight. And! We're about to get the first serious freeze in Ontario this winter, with temperatures below -30 degrees. Sooo cooold.
The bus strike is still on-going, with no end on the horizon. Good/bad, the TAs at my university are voting on their own strike this week, and if classes were cancelled dur to a strike, at least students wouldn't have to venture out into the cold? I mean, that probably isn't worth it in the end, but brrrrr.
I've been driving in early (when my ride leaves, doncha know) so I've had a lot of free time at university. The result of this is that I've finished all my books for English class this term. Particularly good was Being There, and I know there was a film adaptation. I might have to track it down.
... My brother is making a Sidekick and, reading the directions, he says, "It says a cup of milk ... is that a teacup?" *facepalm*

*sigh* Well, today is the last day of break, and I'm back to uni tomorrow. The bus strike in Ottawa is still going on and will continue for at least a week, I think, before the next vote comes up. This is pretty aggravating for people like me, who rely on the bus to commute. Argh, argh. Luckily I have a relative of a relative who works at Carleton (yay!) so I will be bumming rides until then.
Anyway, happy New Year! I don't think I've said it yet, have I? I had such a quiet New Year's Eve, just stayed at home and watched the CNN coverage of Times Square. Oh, and rahmbamarama was trying to get 40,000 words by January 1st so I was spamming them :-P
Today my family drove into Ottawa to do a bunch of end-of-holiday shopping, before we were all busy again. I had recieved a $50 gift certificate for Chapters, so we went there and bought about ten books. I grabbed The Uncensored Bible and The Gift of Fear (which came very highly recommended by cleolinda). I also picked up In & Out because it is HILARIOUS.
My brother found a new series of books to read, by Russell Kirkpatric and bought the first four. He has a fear of starting a series and not being able to find all the books, so this is his solution. And my dad picked up some really interesting history books that I simply must borrow once he's done.
Being out all day has given me a headache, unfortunately, so I must be off. Toodles.

Happy holiday season, everyone! I hope it's going okay for everyone.
I've been baking like a fool since my last exam, which was on the 11th. Conclusion: raspberry brownies are delicious. I've been bringing my baking to family parties, and serving them when we have people over. I really like this time of year, because I can bake a ridiculous amount of treats and there are actually enough people around to eat them :-D
Christmas was very nice. We celebrated quietly (if you can call my family's get-togethers 'quiet') with just the family and a few friends over at my grandparents' place.
The 'loot', as it were, was unexpectedly nice this year!
( the list, if you are so inclined )
On another note, I shot a gun for the very first time today. A friend of my father has a membership to a local firing range, and we went there this morning. I actually enjoyed myself, I feel a lot better having learned some of the basic safety and operating procedures.
When it came to actually shooting, I was okay with the .22 - I hit the target much of the time - but I sucked with the .45, I was like two feet off target >.> Of course, then I tried to hit a balloon with the .22 and it took all ten rounds *cough*
So, yeah. My dad's thinking of getting a menbership, and I'm considering taking one of the safety courses.

Goddamn, that was startling!
My mother just left for work about half an hour ago. Apparently she failed to close the door properly, because when I got up to go to the kitchen I noticed it was oddly chilly. Glancing into the sunroom I noticed that the back door was WIDE OPEN and two of my cats were standing outside, including the crazy one who we lose all the time. Luckily it's cold and snowy outside, so neither cat had left the porch. I had to catch them and then go searching to make sure the others were in the house, and the crazy one is all grumpy now, hissing and chasing the other cats.
It took a few tries to get the door to close and lock properly. It tends to lock without actually closing, so all it takes is a good push for it to open. My mother doesn't check when she closes the door, so she leaves it open all the time. I don't know what we would have done if I wasn't at home, the cats could have all gotten out and frozen, or we could have been burgled. I'll have to have a talk with her tommorrow.

I wrote my second to last exam today, for Linguistics 1001. It was set for two hours ... I finished in 45 minutes. And I wasn't even the first one finished! About ten people left before I did. Admittedly, it was pretty easy, as long as you had been to the classes/read the textbook. Still, it left me VERY BORED for the six hours between my finishing and my leaving the university.
Also, the Ottawa city transit workers are on strike. This means that there are no buses running in the city at all, so I have been communting in with my father. Luckily we've also been hit by a tonne of snow, so traffic is a BREEZE /sarcasm.
What really annoys be about the situation is all the anti-union sentiment I was hearing on the radio this morning, all these callers and commentators plainly blaming the union for the strike. Then, on the radio program I was listening to, they interviewed a disgruntled communter and a huge deal because OH MY GOD he thought it was all the city's fault. Grr.

Prompt me over on my fandom journal.
I just recieved the second shirt on this page :-D I'm quite happy with it. The medium turned out to be a little tight ... but I find that I don't mind. It arrived promptly, too, which is apparently an issue with Questionable Content merchandise.
I have three more exams before I am free for the hoidays. Luckily(?) for me, they start tomorrow and run one after the other, so I'll be finished by Friday. My plan after finishing: 1) holiday baking (Lots of cookies and bars and some fudge), 2) finish my Secret Santa fic for fakenews_fanfic. Oh, and 3) sleep :-D
